Squirrel and bird damage
These architectural details make an attractive gable end on this 1900's house.
They have been covered with aluminum TWICE over the years.

The top has been closed in with wood and a layer of galvanized metal that has all but disintegrated.

Below, looking at the same Architectural detail from the opposite end shows the opening where squirrels and birds have made entry.

Removal of the first layer of aluminum shows the original wood. A one inch space between the two layers of aluminum was filled with nesting materials.

As the original trim gets pulled away, a huge volume of nesting material is found.

With much of the debris removed, the rotting effects of this packed organic material against the wood can be seen.

Completely cleaned of debris and with the trim cut back a 1/4 inch galvanized screen was screwed into place. All voids behind the screen were filled with expandable foam (not shown).

Although these shingles are old and need to be replaced, only the edges are damaged due to the birds that perch above the nesting spots.

This shows the three problem locations at lower corners of roof with aluminum hiding the decayed orginal wood work.

Below the corners are shown removed.
