The Tow Vehicle

1. The abilities of each potential tow vehicle vary considerably. Some may only tow trailers of a few hundred pounds or up to several thousand pounds. Some may not be suitable to towing a trailer at all. For those that are, towing capacity is dependent on vehicle specifications with engine and transmission options often factors.

Identical Tow Vehicles? Automatic rated 5000lbs(GTW), Manual rated 3500lbs (GTW)

As an example one popular SUV with an automatic transmission has a towing capacity of 5,000lbs Gross Trailer Weight. The same model with a manual transmission may only tow 3,500lbs GTW. both have V6 engines and both have a factory optional "Class III" receiver hitch. Check the owner's manual of the tow vehicle carefully and be sure towing is allowed and the weight rating is adequate.
