Expect the Unexpected

When towing it is important to remember that your vehicle will be different is several ways:

Stopping. The trailer weight will be pushing the tow vehicle making braking distances longer. Allow extra room. If you have trailer brakes they may be adjusted to grab slightly more than the tow vehicle. This will help "pull" the tow vehicle to a stop and lessen the risk of jacknife (where the two vehicle stops sooner and the trailer pushes the stopping tow vehicle sideways causing the two to "bend" at the hitch).

Hazard Restrictions. If your trailer has gas bottles (for RV cooking) that may cause route restrictions. Some tunnels (Baltimore MD for example) prohibit bottled gas. A bridge route is usually specified around such restrictions.

Weather Restrictions. In (severe) windy condtions authorities at larger bridges may restrict trailers or prohibit them altogether.

Size Restrictions. As you look ahead, keep in mind the height and width of your trailer. If wider and higher than your tow vehicle (like an RV trailer) you may not fit as easily through the usual places you drive. Safety first, and do stay out of the bank or fast food drive thru!
